great mix of high action whitewater (up to grade V) interspersed with scenic
calm water where birdlife abounds. Not enough? Why not leap feet first into
a big surfing hole, jump a 30ft waterfall or swim ‘The Devils Toilet Bowl’
(water level dependant).

Mathioya
River
Rafting
The
Mathioya is one of the hardest rafting rivers in Kenya with over 450m of
descent over its 22km length. This is a narrow, technical river. It is
fairly low volume even during the rainy season but contains serious,
sustained grade IV/V whitewater. Previous experience is required.
We offer a
two day package which includes a day on the Tana then a second, action
packed day on the Mathioya River. The river can only be run during certain
water levels.

The Athi River

Flowing
through Tsavo National Park, we raft up to 80km’s of Kenya’s second longest
river with three days and three nights on the river. The river gives an
awesome mixture of relaxing calm water with game viewing and abundant

This is a
similar trip to the Athi, with three days and nights on the river. The river
runs through Samburu National Park, where both the animals and river are
wilder. Trip length and nature are as for the Athi River with more serious
and sustained water.

Come and
experience off-shore sailing with African Holiday Safaris aboard our 42'
foot vessel based in Kilifi.
This activity is best done during the North-east monsoon period of October
through April. Minimum duration 4 days preferably though six or more.

About the boat.
Built in Taiwan in
1984 to a Bob Perry design. Centre cockpit, heavy displacement, (15T), long
keeled, masthead rigged ketch. Originally used in the Pacific and later
around the north and west coasts of Australia. Fitted with 40 hp Perkins
4.108 engine, she has a full set, (new 1999), full batten sails (main and
mizzen), and a 130% roller genoa, and a cruising spinnaker. 30 kg CQR
anchor on all chain rode, plus 2 others, (lighter). 600 l water, 400 l
fuel. Sleeps 5 in bunks, plus an additional 4 in the saloon.
Equipment includes 2 toilets /
showers, a 3 burner gas stove w/ oven. Hydraulic steering with auto helm,
VHF radio, satellite telephone, GPS x 2, log, basic wind instruments,
depth sounder, 500 amp battery bank with wind and solar power generators.
Full set of charts for the East African coast. 6 man life raft, and much
else. Fitted out with Snorkel gear for 4 pax, 2 rods for deep sea fishing
and trolling lines as required. Life preservers for up to 10 participants,
plus safety harnesses for use on deck.

►Sea-kayaking
Explore the anchorage's from a half day, to overnight or more with camps on
a remote beach. 4 available. Kenya coast only. Best in Lamu / Kiwayu and
Shimoni
►Scuba diving
Best in
Shimoni and Pemba, but also in Lamu, Malindi and Kilifi.
►Deep sea fishing
This activity available any time whilst sailing. 2 rods, plus hand lines.
►Snorkelling.
Equipment on board for 4 clients at a time. Superb at Shimoni and Pemba,
also Malindi, Kiwayu
Costs
►The yacht
would be at $280.00 per day, (including skipper, RYA Yachtmaster Off-shore),
plus $65.00 per person per day. Inclusive food and drink (soda's and beer
only).
►Scuba diving
course, (PADI, called a "Discover Scuba" Course), includes theory, pool, and
1 off shore dive at $90.00, additional off shore dive at about $30.00 each.

►Sea-kayaking
on its own (no yacht based accommodation. As per #1 above, plus at the
coast, $95.00 per person per day, minimum 4 pax and for min 3 days. Travel
time to and from coast exempted
Other things
to do. All participants will gain, and if required, log, experience in
off-shore day and night sailing and will be expected to fully participate in
all aspects of sailing, from setting / trimming sails, helming and
watch-keeping. Off watch crew will be responsible for all food preparation
and cooking, plus small boat housekeeping requirements. If there is
interest shown I will give instruction in coastal navigation, charts,
currents and use of the GPS, together with basics about boat handling,
rigging, sail trim etc. Other subjects including weather, aqua fauna, local
history etc.
Snorkel
diving, (4 at a time), and 2 deep sea fishing rods - 55 lb. test. Nov -
March is the best fishing season, and one would expect to take at least a
couple of fish each day, Barracuda, sailfish, marlin, shark, bonito and tuna
are all likely.

Harbour Cruises in
Mombasa
Luxury dhow cruises around the habour are very popular in Mombasa and,not-withstanding
the price,they are an excellent way to see the habour,Old Town and Fort
Jesus and get a slap-up meal at the end of it.Topping the billing is
Tamarind Dhow run by the posh restaurant Tamarind Restaurant in Nyali.The
cruise embarks from the jetty below the Tamarind Restaurant,and includes a
habour tour and a fantastic meal.There is a choice of seafood,steak or
vegetarian dishes.Prices include a complimentary cocktail and transport to
and from your hotel.Another company which is offering dhow cruises in
Mombasa is Jahazi Marine.They do cultural trips,sailing around Mombasa in
the morning,lunch at their otherwise expensive Jahazi Restaurant
overlookingTudor Creek,and afternoon spent at the floating market,visiting a
tradional herbalist and dhow builder.They also offer Mombasa by night dhow
cruises ,including a sonet-lumiere performance at Fort Jesus,and a
French-style lobster dinner inside served by waiters dressed up as
portuguese,suppsedlt to remind you of the good old days when the only
tourists were heavily armed raiders.
Dhow trips around Funzi Island
Seahorse Dhow offers dhow trips including snorkelling and seafood lunch .The
office is at Colliers Centre,Diani Beach. Dhow trips start from Gazi Beach
in the morning and they organise transport from/to your accommodation
.Another company is Funzi Sea Adventures which runs more luxurious dhow
trips to Funzi Island and up the Ramisi River . Funzi is a small mangrove
island about 35km south of Diani Beach.It is stunning and much quiter than
Wasini.As with other islands along the coast,dhow tours to the village at
the southern tip of Funzi becoming increasingly popular,and crocodiles and
dolphines can be spotted in the inlets.
Dolphin Dhow Safaris around Wasini Island
Just off the south coast of Wasini Island, Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National
Park is one of the best marine reserves in Kenya.The park covers 28 sq km of
pristine coral reefs and offers excellent diving and snorkelling.You have a
resonable chance of seeing dolphins in the Shimoni Channel and humpback
whales are somwtimes spotted between August and October.It is easy to
organise your own boat trip with a local captain.The dhow trip normally
includes lunch and a walk in the coral gardens on Wasini Island.A good place
to start looking for a boatman is the office of KWS ,about 200m south of the
main pier,where you will also have to come to pay the entry fee to the
reserve.The best time to snorkel and dive is between October and
March.Various companies offer organised dhow tours out of Shimoni.Transfer
from/to your accommodation is organised.The friends of Kenyan Dolphins have
set up the Dolphin Dhow,office at Barclays Centre in Diani Beach,a
dolphin-spotting and snorkelling trip around Wasini Island.The dhow leaves
from Shimoni jetty daily in the morning .The price includes snorkelling
equipment,soft drinks,a Swaheli seafood lunch and the marine park fees .
Pilli-Pipa is another expat-owned company offering full-day dhow trips to
the marine park,this time with lunch at the Pilli-Pipa restaurant on Wasini
Island.The office is at Colliers Centre in Diani Beach.The price includes
snorkelling,lunch and alcoholic and soft drinks.If you come on a dhow
trip,you can also avail yourself of some of the cheapest scuba diving on the
Kenyan coast. Another option is Wasini Island Restaurant & Kisite Dhow
Tours,office at Jadini Beach Hotel in Diani Beach.They run popular
snorkelling dhow trips to the marine park including a nature walk on Wasini
and a very good seafood lunch at the Wasini Island restaurant.Trips leave in
the morning from Shimoni jetty.
