Family Safaris in Africa

Going on a family safari in Africa will be one of the most rewarding and exciting vacations you'll ever take. But, taking your family on safari in Africa isn't cheap so you want to pick the right safari tour, and country, in order to get the most out of it. This article will help you plan the right safari for your family and offers tips on keeping the children happy en route, as well as specific family-friendly safari recommendations.

Age Restrictions on Safaris
Many safari tours have age restrictions on children, which is why an independently booked and planned safari is usually a better option for those traveling with children under 12. This is because many tour operators feel it's unsafe for small children to be sitting in the back of an open safari vehicle while viewing wildlife. Children are also more prone to sunburn, falling ill or general boredom on these long drives. Also, when you view wildlife it's important to keep quiet and that's sometimes difficult to enforce with a small child.

Some adventure safari options like canoeing or walking safaris are not suitable for children under 12.

While you may find it easier to hire a car and book your own safaris, here are some excellent family-friendly safaris you could go on or at least get inspired by:

*14 Days Family adventure and Safari
* 9 Day Kenya Family Safari
* 12 Day Kenya Family Safari Holiday
* 10 Day Family Safari tour
* Family Adventure Vacation in Kenya

Family Wildlife Safari in Kenya
10-Days family safari visiting most popular parks in Kenya, with interesting features for children and adults alike.

Our years of experience have taught us that families travelling together have unique needs in terms of areas of interest, itinerary design and pace. As a result of this, we have sampled specific itineraries to suit families, and this is one of them.

This is by no means exhaustive, and should act only as a guide as to our flexible safari programs. Write to us with specific requirements and we shall be happy to work with you in creating a most memorable family safari. Important information to provide should include number of children and their ages.

The prices quoted below are based on 2 adults (parents) and two children aged below 12 yrs. Again this is meant to give you a guide in your planning budget.

Brief information about this safari:

The safari departs from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park, located about 250 km South of Nairobi and lying at the foot of the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro. The park is famous for its big game and great scenic beauty - the entire landscape is dominated by Mt Kilimanjaro.

After Amboseli there is a day/night break in Nairobi so as to cut short the driving distances, before proceeding to Sweetwaters Game Reserve. While in Nairobi, enjoy a walk at “The Nairobi Safari Walk”, which is quite an adventurous experience, and as well visit Giraffe Centre, with a chance to feed the giraffes.

Sweetwaters Game Reserve is a private sanctuary near the foot of Mt. Kenya, with variety of wildlife. Among the highlights at the reserve include a visit to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary located within the reserve, which is the only one of its kind in Kenya, a visit to Morani the tame rhino, the Visitors Information Centre and the optional night game drive. It will certainly be worth your time to stay here for 2 nights (1 full day).

The safari then proceeds to the floor of the Rift Valley, to Lake Nakuru National Park, world famous for flamingos that carpet the lake. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered black rhino.

Lake Naivasha will be your next stop, where the family will enjoy a boat ride on the lake and a guided walking safari at Crescent Island, one of the few places in the world where one can walk freely amidst wild animals – there are no predators.

The highlight of the safari is the finally the visit to Maasai Mara, arguably Kenya\'s most popular game sanctuary, where you will have the best opportunity of spotting the Big Five- lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant.
