In the crisp air of dawn, the passengers drink coffee while the crew partially inflates the balloon with enormous fans. The gas burners are then ignited and the balloon fills with hot air slowly raising the baskets. Before departing, finalized checks are made, and the passengers then climb into the balloon basket for a take off.

The balloons lift off just before sunrise when the breeze on the plains is still cold. Once airborne, the balloons are blown by the prevailing winds across the broad landscape. Apart from the hiss of the burners, the flight above the Masai Mara plains is magically silent. The pilot controls the height of the craft by regulating the flow of hot air into the balloon. Sometimes the balloon will descend over the plains for a close up view of the wildlife; on other occasions, it rises to clear a tree canopy and rise over the reverine forest.

At the end of the flight, the passengers are treated to a champagne breakfast, complete with flowers.

Over a dozen balloons depart from sites near six of the lodges and tented camps. Our customers are often able to view four of the 'Big Five' while ballooning. A flight certificate is issued on completion of the balloon safari.

You'll be amazed by the silence as you float over the plains, the forst and the Mara River. The sounds below drift clearly upwards; a lion's roar, elephants crashing through the bush, screeching baboons perched in the tips of the trees startled to see something above them.

For an hour or so you drift wherever the air currents take you, then in the time-honoured tradition of ballooning the world over you toast your return to earth with a champagne breakfast, cooked before your eyes on the burners that minutes before, kept you suspended in the air.

Each passenger earns a certificate signed by the pilot to commemorate the flight. The Balloon Safari ends with a game drive, on the return journey to your camp.

Lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles and plains game are among the animals you will see. The migration of the wildebeests from July to October is a sight that, viewed from the vantage point of a balloon, you will never forget. And photography is a must from this unique perspective.

The adventure begins just before dawn. Flames from the balloons' burners light the darkness as the crews inflate their craft. As the first pink tongues of sunlight flicker across the skies, the inflated balloons begin to rise. Suspended in a basket beneath the rainbow coloured canopy, you're off for a game-viewing adventure with an entirely different perspective.

SOME POINTS AND CONDITIONS TO BE AWARE OF

REPORTING TIME

Please ensure that you are at the launch site by 6.15 am. Ask for an early morning call. The Manager or your Receptionist will give you every assistance and further details regarding your balloon safari.

We would advise you to bring a sweater or windproof jacket, as it may be a little cold before take off or at breakfast. Please be sure to bring a suitable bush hat which we recommend you wear both during the flight and at the open air breakfast. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended - please do not wear high heeled shoes.

Balloon Safaris are entirely safe with very experienced pilots, the best and safest equipments maintained to the highest required standard. It is however, a condition that each passenger, on boarding one of the balloons, absolves both Mara Ballon Safaris Limited and agents of any liability that may arise from any incident that may occur during or after a balloon flight, whatever the circumstances may have been to give rise to the incident.

You may bring whatever equipment you have including a video. Large camera cases may have to be taken in one of the chase vehicles.

Due to the very limited space and the high demand for seats, cancellation charges will be levied for any bookings cancelled once it has been confirmed.

The current price is US$395 or USD$425 per person which includes collection from all establishments, in Western Mara, balloon flight, champagne breakfast and return game drive. It is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

African Holiday Safaris reserve the right to cancel a flight for Mara Mara Balloon Safaris  for any reason whatsoever. If your flight is cancelled due to unforseen circumstances, a complete refund of any advance payment will be made. If the flight is cancelled at the launch site due to adverse weather conditions, a free game drive on the return journey is offered
