Nelion (5188m) and Batian (5199m) are composed
of a superb rough rock - syenite - at least as good as granite for climbing.
Numerous excellent rock and ice routes exist. The main summits generally
require a bivouac, satellite peaks such as Point John offer fine one day
climbs. Climbing on Mount Kenya is
serious and it is important to acclimatise well before tackling the main
summits. It is advisable to do a training climb on a minor peak
before going up Nelion or Batian |

5 Days
Sirimon - Chogoria
Route
Day 1
Depart Nairobi for
Naromoru at 9.00 a.m. arriving in time for lunch at the
Nanyuki Lodge. In
the afternoon we are driven to the Sirimon gate and then to roadhead at
11000 ft. An easy walk in the afternoon to help acclimatization. Overnight
Jude Main Camp (11,000 ft.) in high altitude tents
Day 2
Ascend the Sirimon track
to Likii North Valley and camp overnight in this beautiful little valley
below the subsidiary peaks of Tereri and Sendeyo, two ancient parasitic
vents of the main peaks.
Day 3
Climb out of the North
Valley and into the Machinder Valley, one of the broadest valleys on the
mountain, with many giant groundsels. Camp at the head of the Machinder
Valley, just below the main peaks of Batian and Nelion (14,00 ft.)
Day 4
Alpine ascent of the
third highest peak, Mt. Lenana (16,355 ft.) on route up the north face
little used by tourists. Four hours of stiff walking to the summit. Then
descend to Teleki Valley on the opposite side of the main peaks, to
Machinders Camp for a good night's rest (13,900 ft.)
Day 5
Descend the mountain and
return to the Naro Moru Lodge. After lunch, travel back to Nairobi arriving
in the evening.

6 Days
Sirimon - Chogoria Route
Day 1
09:00 am pick up from your hotel and transfer to Sirimon gate 2600m. Meet
with your guide & porters en route, picnic lunch is served at the park gate
before you begin the acclimatization hike through the moorland to Old Moses
Camp 3300m for dinner and overnight [3 hrs]
Day 2
Breakfast and hike gradually to Shipton’s camp 4200m, with picnic lunch for
dinner and overnight [6-7 hours]. On a clear day you get a good view of the
peaks while walking through the Mackinder’s.
Day 3
After breakfast make an anti-clockwise summit circuit of the peaks via Kami
hut at Hausburg Col. to Mackinder’s camp 4200m. The walk takes 4-5 hrs.
Dinner & overnight at Mackinder's Camp - picnic lunch en route.
Day 4
Pre-dawn attempt of Pt. Lenana 4985m and descend to Mintos/Hall tarn area
4300m for dinner and overnight in tents [6 hours]
Day 5
Descend to Chogoria Park gate 3000m for dinner and overnight in Meru Mount
Kenya Bandas.
Day 6
Descend via the forest and connect with the vehicle transfer back to
Nairobi. Lunch is provided en route in a budget hotel. |
