4 Days Aberdare | Shaba | Samburu Luxury Lodge Safaris
Day 01: Nairobi - Aberdares
Distance: 180 km (2 hrs 30 min). Morning drive through fertile Kikuyu
land to the Aberdare Country Club for a farmhouse lunch. In the
afternoon transfer to The Ark for an overnight floodlit game viewing.
Overnight accommodation at The Ark, L,D.
Day 02: Aberdares - Shaba/Samburu
Distance: 210 km (3 hrs. 30 min.). Soon after breakfast at The Ark,
rejoin your safari driver at the Aberdare Country Club and continue
further north to the semi-desert area of Shaba National Reserve.
Afternoon game viewing drive in this reserve. Lunch, dinner and
overnight at Sarova Shaba Lodge, B,L,D.
Day 03: Shaba/Samburu
Early rise for a game viewing drive in the adjacent Samburu National
Park. Breakfast at Samburu Serena Lodge. Further game viewing drive in
the Park. Return to Sarova Shaba Lodge for lunch. Afternoon at leisure
for perhaps a game viewing drive in this reserve. Overnight at Sarova
Shaba Lodge, B,L,D.
Day 04: Shaba - Nairobi
Distance: 360 km (5 hrs. 30 min). After breakfast, drive south to Mt
Kenya Safari Club for lunch. In the afternoon return to Nairobi, B.
Remarks
Only a small overnight bag is permitted at the Treetops Lodge or Ark
Lodge. Storage facilities are available at the "base hotel". Children
below 7 are not admitted.

The lodges are also the main attraction of the Aberdare. Both Treetops and The Ark are built above the ground beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks. Visitors must book in advance and cannot make their own way to the lodges in private vehicles. Instead check-in is at the Aberdare Country club for The Ark and the Outspan Hotel for Treetops and they bus you to the lodge. Treetops is one of Kenya's most famous hotels as this is where British Princess Elizabeth was informed that she was now Queen in 1952 when her father died. The Ark, however, offers better game viewing, especially at night.
Nocturnal game viewing is taken so seriously that there is a buzzer in each room which sounds if an unusual animal turns up at the waterhole. Elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and bushbuck are regular visitors. Sarova Shaba Lodge:
Sarova Shaba lodge is a luxury lodge located on the periphery
of Shaba National Reserve overlooking the crocodile infested Uaso Nyiro
river. Nairobi is about 314 kms from Nairobi. The lodge is accessible by
both air and road. All the 85 thatched roofed bedrooms are air
conditioned, one superior suite and four luxury suites, all including
private bathe and shower, hot and cold running water.
